Battle at the Bay to Breakers….
Bay to Breakers, San Francisco
Written by Platinum rider/runner Todd Booth
What a huge and crazy event!!!! The total number of participants were in the number of 60,000. Within the mayhem was 24,304 registered runners. Preparing for an event of this size takes a solid year incorporating an army of volunteers and staffers. This year another record was broken. Last year it was the male runners shattering the 12K world record. This year it was the females doing the job. Breaking a record this year was a very impressive feat due to a head wind for most of the course. The temps were chilly in the high 40’s at best. There was a large international field for the elite classes. Lineth Chepkurui from Kenya ran a WR 38:07 for the 7.4 mile course. That is a 5:07 minute/mile on a course that had a huge hill on mile three. The hill topped off at a 18% grade. My back is still recovering…. Sammy Kitwarafrom Kenya won the male race with a time of 34:15:21. He ran an average mile of 4:36. Sick! He set the world record here last year. Peter Kiruiof Kenya finished less than a SECOND behind Sammy for 2nd overall. It was a real honor seeing some of the fastest humans on earth show us how it is done. Plus, they look effortless.
My race was a little disappointing. I was determined to win the elite masters division which wasn’t any small task. But, was humbled once again. Last years winner Dennis Sanders from Utah set a blistering time of 37:59. I finished 4th in the Master elites with a time of 41:45. A 5:36 minute/mile was a challenge with the hill. I ended up 64th overall out of 24,304 runners. The whole experience of participating with (or on the tail-end) of an international elite field was exciting. With the private limo bus, VIP tents, comp breakfast/dinner, and escorted to the start… one can get use to that first class treatment. My bubble bursted after the first mile when most of the elites were already 100 yards up the road. It was fun while it lasted.

So Cal-Nevada District TT Championships
So Cal-Nevada District TT Championships 2010

Gary Douville, racing in the Masters 35-39 class, is the 2010 district champion in that class AND set the fast time of the day with a 49:14 over the 37.9K course, beating all other times including the P/1/2 class. I participated in the Masters 45-49 class and posted a time of 54:06 which was good enough for 10th place in that age group. If I had lined up with the Cat 4s, that time would have netted me a 5th place, which would have been my best placing ever on that course as I’ve raced there in the past only as a 4. (C’est la vie…then again, Gary could have been the Elite district TT champion in addition to his district CX championship if he’d signed up with the P/1/2s).
Results:
Gary Douville — 1st Master 35-39
Bobby Langin Sr – 2nd Master 50-54
Tom Anhalt — 10th Master 45-49
Next up Santa Barbara!!!!!
With snow being a factor at Big Bear the next venue for the California State Series and US Cup have moved up to Elings Park in the heart of Santa Barbara. This is Team Platinum’s home turf! Much needed trail work began last weekend with the help of a few Platinum riders (Jon Miller, Steve Bertrand and Todd Booth) along with other local cyclist in the area. This is one of the best all- around courses out there. More good news….the venue will be held on the soccer fields like in years past. That’s a beautiful setting for a great event. Team Platinum will be out in force!!! See you on June 6th….

Booth hits the OC…
Written by Platinum rider Todd Booth
After coming off a successful month of bike racing and a huge win at Sea Otter I planned to switch gears and turn toward a few big running races in May. First up was the OC Half Marathon. I’m seeking the half marathon distance due to less training and recovery than the grueling marathons. There has been a surge in popularity for the 13.2 mile distance. I’m taking advantage of being on the young end of the Master’s Elite division. These are the years to excel.
The OC Half Marathon is a “well oiled machine”. The OC has a half, a full, a 5K and a huge kids mile. It’s amazing to see how an event is put on so smoothly with over 10,000 runners in one place. The thought of thousands of runners taking over the streets makes my blood flow…I love it. The race started with the marathon runners tackling the first half of their race on our half marathon course. So this made quite a scene at the start…swarms of people! The key is to be seated in the front corral with the elite runners, take off hard and stay in the front as long as possible. This prevents tripping over someone else’s feet or weaving around slower runners in order to find your pace. For me taking off hard and finding my rhythm after the first couple of miles has worked. This course is a perfect one for setting up your PR “personal best time”. It is a very flat course with only two short kicker climbs. One of those was on mile 10. I came off the start in fourth position out of the full and half marathon runners. The bibs were different colors to separate the runners. I maintain my position until about the 8 mile mark where two of the leaders of the marathon caught me. With them another half marathoner was drafting along. I jumped onto that group and tried my best to stick with them. We ended up dropping my competition (the half runner) at mile 10 on the short but very steep climb. Oh that hurt!!! I was blown away with the pace these guys were running, plus so smooth. They were maintaining a 5:25:00 and had to do another 13.1 miles! I had a hard enough time just trying to stay with them. Pack running has the same benefits as cycling in a peloton… it shields you from the wind but also helps push you past the red zone. These guys kept me going and paced me away from my next rival. I missed my PR by just 10 seconds. I was very happy with this race especially since it was to be a building block for the Bay to Breakers in SF in two weeks. There I will see crowds of mass proportion of over 30,000 runners and crazies in the streets of San Fransisco. My goal will be the same… win the master elite.
Result:
Todd Booth 1:12:51:00 4th overall (out of 6,112 runners) 1st master elite field
