The drive was as epic as the race. This one was held 30 miles East of Temecula in the middle of nowhere and the temperatures hit 103degF for the Elite race. The course was held on a motocross track and featured mega hills and lots of sandy corners and soft steep bumps and suited me well. I grabbed the holeshot and led for the first two laps before our series leader took off leaving John Bailey and I to fight it out for second. I bobbled in a sandy section on the last lap (unfortunately wasn’t paying attention to laps cards), lost my placing, and finished 3rd.

My M.O. is to basically suck wind at the beginning of the ‘cross season and build fitness into December. This season would be no different coming off a stellar vacation and some other minor health snafus. In any case, Bonelli was the typical shock to the system. I was the only Platinum racer since Bobby was sitting this one out and I nailed the holeshot pretty good and hit the first barrier behind Sid Taberlay (see picture). He used his fitness coming off his great mountain bike Worlds finish (top 30ish) and handling skills to drop the entire field on the first lap. I have difficulty holding back and led the chase group of 5 guys for another lap and a half before cracking, fading, and finishing 10th.

The US Cup Series took six races on the West Coast and declared a West Coast Champion based on the best four race totals. The same was done on the East Coast with six races. To find the overall winner of both series, a race was held at Bonelli Park, CA. Points from this race were tallied with the two series points. This event was named the Kenda Cup West/East Series Unification race. A one day Champion was decided as well as the series overall Champion.
The format favored the West Coast riders since the race was held in California. With that said, the Sept heat put a strain on all the riders. DNF’s were common as the day went on. The temperature hit the upper 90’s. The course challenged the riders on an eight mile loop that had fire road climbs, steep power climbs, rocky descents and “leg burning” flat sections. Riders climbed close to 1,000′ per lap. The Cat 2 racers were challenged with two laps. While the Cat 1 riders took the course on with three laps at high noon.
Platinum was well represented with riders going for the overall series title as well as a win for the day. Todd Booth (Cat1 40-44) had nothing to loose going into the series in 3rd overall in the West Coast Series. Todd rides his best in the heat and he took advantage of the situation. Todd won the Cat 1 40-44 race which put him on top of the podium for the overall US Cup Series Champion. John Biron (Cat 1 45-49) had a great race placing 3rd in a tough field. Luke Werkhoven pulled off a 2nd place finish in the Cat 2 Clydes. Brandon Droese rode to a 3rd place finish in the Cat 2 17-18. That put Brandon on top of podium for the overall in the US Cup Series for the Cat 2 17-18. Steve Bertrand won the Super-D in the Cat 2 50+. John Reveles finished in 12th in the Cat 2 40-44 class.
